Wardrobe Check

One of the most versatile pieces in any wardrobe is a basic shift dress.  Traditionally, a shift dress is a sleeveless dress that doesn’t hug the body, but hangs straight.  It typically has a higher neckline and a shorter hemline.  This style was huge in the ’60′s, but has continued to be a go-to piece for women ever since.  A shift is a dress for all seasons as it can be worn alone with sandals in the spring and summer, or with a sweater and boots in the fall and winter.  Nowadays, we are lucky enough to have multiple variations of the basic shift: those that cinch the waist, come in bright colors or textures, have pretty detail around the neck, etc.  My picks for a basic shift are as follows:

1. Vince Silk-Georgette Shift Dress – $198

2. Ted Baker JIRAD Tailored Stretch Shift Dress – $279

3. Reiss Calla Panel Front Shift Dress – $300

4. Topshop Scuba Structured Shift Dress – $76

5. Dorothy Perkins Red Collared Shift Dress – $75

I actually don’t own a ton of dresses in this style. Looks like I need to pick up a few more!

I have a black one that I adore – I never thought I would be reaching for it in my closet as often as I do. I’m loving the pink option, soo maybe it’s time for me to invest in a second dress!

I love shift dresses! I own several and they made regular rotations in my work wardrobe — over a button-up blouse, under a blazer or just on their own.
