There is no better time to sort through, and organize, your closet than just before the change of a season. I have been meaning to do this for some time now, but it always ends up at the bottom of my to-do list. If you’re suffering from the same problem, or it’s time for a change, here are some tips to help you get started:
One thing at a time: When I was younger, I would tear apart my entire closet and become so overwhelmed with the disaster I had created that I’d be turned off from completing the task. (Sorry, Mom!) I’ve learned that by breaking it down into smaller sections, or organizing by type of clothing item, I feel more of a sense of accomplishment and I am apt to move forward. Don’t expect to get it done in one day.
It’s okay to say goodbye: I am completely guilty of holding onto clothing because, “I know I’ll wear it someday.” False. If you have never worn an item of clothing, it hasn’t seen the light of day for an extended period of time, or it downright doesn’t fit, get rid of it. If it is stained, has a hole in it, or has been worn to death get rid of it. It is taking up valuable space in your closet! If it’s the money you spent that is holding you back, try selling your item on e-bay. Otherwise, donate it to a charity of your choice.
First things first: Make sure that the items you reach for frequently are easily accessible. Group your favorite pieces together in one space, or ensure that you have easy access to them. The last thing you want to do is climb up on your step stool and dig around in the back crevice of your closet on the reg.
Treat yourself: After all of your hard work, you deserve it! New hangers, fancy boxes for your accessories or shoes, or even a simple decoration that makes you smile will make a world of a difference in your closet. You want to enjoy the time you spend putting together your outfit, so if sprucing things up a bit is going to help, go for it!
